INDIVIDUALIZED REVIEW STANDARDS

Individualized, Function-First Review

A structured process for evaluating non-standard mobility aids, transportation contexts, evidence quality, actual risk, and effective alternatives.

Ten-step review framework

Document each step and identify what evidence is present, missing, disputed, or limited.

  1. Identify the claimed mobility function.Describe the task and disability-related function without deciding by device appearance.
  2. Identify the comparison activity, aid, or transportation context.Use a relevant comparator rather than an abstract default.
  3. Evaluate functional output.Consider distance, duration, task completion, access, and other useful output.
  4. Evaluate physiological and movement burden.Keep observed measures in their supplied units and scope.
  5. Evaluate body coupling and environment.Account for active or passive movement, posture, vehicle, surface, route, and setting.
  6. Review repeated within-person observations.Prefer repeated, comparable context while preserving mixed results.
  7. Review source authority, missingness, and reproducibility.Check provenance, sample size, quality, limitations, and versioning.
  8. Distinguish observations from diagnosis.Wearable observations do not independently diagnose a condition or directly measure pain.
  9. Evaluate actual risk rather than assumptions.Use individualized, setting-specific facts and document uncertainty.
  10. Consider reasonable and less-restrictive alternatives.Test whether an alternative actually preserves effective access.

Evidence

Review source authority, missingness, units, sample size, and limitations.

Open evidence review

This framework supports documented review; outcomes remain individualized and tied to the governing authority and setting.
