Standards

Review the function, not the stereotype

Non-traditional mobility aid review should be individualized, source-linked, and environment-specific.

1. Function

Identify the mobility limitation and the functional role of the device. Appearance alone should not decide whether something is a mobility aid.

2. Physical accommodation

Review fit, clearance, stopping, transfer, crowding, storage, and the specific built environment.

3. Direct threat

Actual risk matters. Speculation, discomfort, or recreation assumptions should not substitute for evidence.

4. Narrow restrictions

Where risk exists in one location, consider whether access remains possible in concourses, sidewalks, waiting areas, or other safer zones.

5. Effective alternatives

Alternatives should be assessed for whether they are equally effective or impose avoidable physical burden.

6. Reviewable record

Document the facts, sources, risks, mitigations, and reasons for the decision.
